We took some pictures at downtown, Chicago. There is Millennium Park, this place attracts a lot of visitors. And then there is a bean-like looking structure called “The Bean”, which will bring people good luck once they touch the bean. Also, we took some pictures in the Macy’s store. We could see the Christmas decoration around the store such as tree and the lights. Even though Christmas holidays will be arriving after a few more weeks, we could feel the atmosphere. Another one is Starbucks. We can see a Starbucks store almost everywhere. At last, there are two of the popular brands which are Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein.

Technology

As everybody knows, television, cell phone, computer, microwave are the important things in our daily life. However, I think I cannot live without computer because computer is the most convenience tools ever for helping every human’s daily life. Do you want to go back to the old society as we have to do everything by hands? Without television and cell phone, we are just having less entertainment and inconvenience to contact with people. But, when we are doing project, homework, or other research papers, we can only use computer to finish, and it is the fastest way and the most convenience way ever. We can read news through the internet and play the online games. Also, using computer to contact with people is convenience, and you will be able to talk to your friends after the computer is connected to the internet.

Movie

“The slumdog Millionaire” story has happened in India. Jamal (Dev), Latika (Freida Pinto) and Jamal’s brother were born in slum. When they were children, they were forced to be beggars after they had been kidnap. They escaped when the boss tried to blind their eyes for getting more paid. But, Jamal’s brother decided to let Latika go so that those people were not able to catch them again. Jamal joined the TV show because he knew it was Latika’s favorite show. Jamal did not know the answer for the last question. So, he chose to call his friend to get the answer. Latika got the called, but she did not know the answer either. At that moment, Jamal’s brother made a big decision for Jamal.


I recently watched a movie named “Orphan”. I highly recommend this movie to adults especially for people who love to watch horror movies, except kids. I have never seen the movie style as this one before. There are a lot of unexpected plots which will surprise the audiences. I did not know that Esther could be an adult who looks like a kid. It’s also hard to believe how evil she is attempting so many killing scenes.

Music

“Pretty Boy” is one of my favorite songs. The song expressed about love, and it was presented by M2M. The group was a Norwegian pop music duo; Marion Elise Raven and Marit Elisabeth Larsen were the group’s members. Pop music and romance music are my favorite type of music. I feel relax every time when I listen to these type of music. When I listen to the rap music, I do not feel relax, but I know there are a lot of people who like to listen to rap music to reduce pressure. I do not like it maybe because of the different culture.

Reading

One of my favorite articles is called “Text Generation Gap: U R 2 Old”. It discusses about teenagers who are very concern of their privacy such as when talking on the phone, or when they are texting messages in front of their parents. Therefore, they would use secret words when they are texting. In my opinion, even though parents are not necessary to learn how to text, they should learn a little so that it won’t lead to a lack of communication with their children. I have to admit that most of the teenagers desire more spaces and privacy than adults. But, they should have the basic table manner such as not using the phone while having dinner with family. Teenagers have to realize that communicate with family is very important, parents would never know how’s your school and other things that concerned about you if you never talked to them.

Cultural Identity

My name is Cecilia, and I came from Guangzhou, China. One of the pictures in the middle of the poster shows the location where I was born in. I didn’t post Chinese culture’s picture because there are some things that I usually do no matter if I was in China or in the U.S. For instance, from this picture- taste of Chicago, I would attend this event every year to enjoy the delicious foods like turkey, ice-cream with cakes. On the other hand, when I was in china, I would join this same kind of event also because Chinese food has a variety of cuisines. I am able to taste a lot of creative dishes through this kind of event. Another picture in my poster is McDonalds, how familiar that name is! This is one of the most popular franchise fast food restaurants, and it originally established from the U.S. In Chicago, I almost go to McDonalds to order hamburgers for lunch every time when I finished my classes. In China, having McDonald’s meal has always been my first choice when I went shopping with my friends. There are a lot of McDonalds’ stores that can be found which makes it so famous and convenient for their customers. Apple brand has not only influenced America’s business, but it has also influenced China’s business. I am using an I-phone and I-pod in Chicago. Before I came to the U.S, I was using apple’s computer. My life has always been connected with Chinese culture and American culture.

Pop Culture

Popular culture influences me a lot. For instance, the clothing styles, movies, and the television shows. In china, the way I dress is the same as Korean and Japan’s fashion style because Chinese people adore these two countries’ fashion style very much. Since I came to the U.S, I have noticed that the fashion style very much similar to the Europe’s style. Therefore, I gradually change myself dressing in the European’s fashion. I pack up all the clothes and put them into the box and never wear them again. The other thing has influenced me which is the IPod brand. Most of my friends have their own IMac, IPhone.

Before taking the poplar culture class, I thought it will only embrace the language and some literature of the country. After taking the popular culture class, I am more aware that it embraces things more than I thought. For example, we read some article to realize more about the popular culture such as fashion, music and movie. I have also learned what high culture is. At the beginning, I did not have many ideas of what popular culture was until taking this class. I have learned more than I expected and something I never really knew before.
